Please join us as we “trudge the Road of Happy Destiny.” (AA Big Book 164:3)
This week, we shared with each other during the group what we gained from our 5th Step experience. For those who have not yet completed the 5th Step, please do not procrastinate. The Big Book warns us why we need to admit our shortcomings to another person:
(72:2) The best reason first (here’s a warning): If we skip this VITAL step, we may NOT overcome drinking. Time after time newcomers have tried to keep to themselves certain facts about their lives. Trying to avoid this humbling experience, they have turned to easier methods. Almost invariably (or almost always) they got drunk. Having persevered with the REST of the program, they wondered why they fell. We think the reason is that they never COMPLETED their housecleaning. They took inventory all right, but hung on to some of the worst items in stock. They only THOUGHT they had lost their egoism and fear; they only THOUGHT they had humbled themselves. But they had not learned enough of humility, fearlessness and honesty, in the sense we find it NECESSARY, until they told someone else ALL their life story.
The AA 12 and 12 expresses this warning in a similar way:
Most of us would declare that without a fearless admission of our defects to another human being we could NOT stay sober. It seems plain that the grace of God will NOT enter to expel our destructive obsessions until we are willing to try this. (pp. 56-57)
We also read and discussed Step 5 in The Little Red Book The Original 1946 Edition and we read and discussed Steel On Steel. Steel On Steel is a particular group format for people who have already gone through the steps. It is essentially a group 5th Step. This group format was created by Mark H., who was a beautiful example of recovery and popular AA speaker. If you have not already heard any of his talks, please listen to one of his talks. You will not be disappointed.
As a group, we decided that we will experiment with doing a Steel On Steel Group on the first Sunday of the month. This group will only be open to committed members of Emotional Sobriety & Food and will NOT be recorded. If you are willing to commit to attending this group, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We will use a different conference call number for our Steel on Steel Group.
PLEASE BE AWARE, ON THE FIRST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH, EXCLUDING HOLIDAYS, WHEN OUR GROUP IS CANCELLED, THE REGULAR OPEN MEETING WILL NOT TAKE PLACE.
If anyone would like to know more about Steel On Steel, please clink of the link to hear Mark H.’s talk on this subject.
Homework: Next week, if you have not already done so, please complete your 5th Step.
Since next week is the first Sunday of the month, I am very excited that we will do our first Steel on Steel Group together. This is something that I have wanted to experience for a very long time. Our regular open meeting is cancelled.
After that, I would like us to read from The Unpopular Guide to Step 5.
I am so grateful to be sharing this journey with all of you!
Thank you all for sharing your experience, strength and hope.
“Together we can do what we can never do alone.”
In love and service,
