How Can We Build And Maintain A Right Relationship With God?
Building and maintaining a relationship with God is similar to how we build relationships with other people.
Key components to any relationship includes:
Time: we need to spend time with them.
Shared experiences: we need to do things WITH them and FOR them.
Communication: we need to talk to them and share our feelings and thoughts.
Respect: In order to have a relationship with someone, we need to be sensitive to their feelings and honor. We need to be careful in what we say TO them and ABOUT them.
Therefore, we can apply these same ideas to build and maintain a healthy relationship with God.
Time: we need to spend time with God, and acknowledge His presence and existence.
Shared experiences: We need to spend time contemplating and understand who God is. One way to do this is to read inspirational literature, in particular within your own personal spiritual or religious tradition.
Communication: talk and listen to God though prayer and meditation. Prayer is when we talk to God, and meditation is when we listen to God. Prayer can be formal or informal. Through meditation, we are able to listen to God and contemplate His presence and determine His will for us.
Respect: Be humble. We can do this by surrendering to our food plan and eating abstinently. When we are abstinent, we are not a slave to our ego and physical urges.
Actions: Be guided by spiritual principles in our thoughts, feelings, actions and speech.
Trust God: live consciously with the thought that there is a purpose to life. Trust and rely on God that He is running the show and He will take care of us and give us everything we need.
Have a sense of reverence and awe: Express gratitude and appreciation for everything God has given us.
